ABOUT

The U.S. Customs Service is one of the oldest and most important agencies in the country. It has also played a significant role in the maritime history of the Port of Houston. Steve Hooper will detail the exciting history of the U.S. Customs Service from its origins in 1789 through its many important functions such as establishing lighthouses, supervising America’s revenue cutters, providing for the relief of sick and disabled seamen and many other critical duties. The story of the United States and the Port of Houston would not be complete without examining the contributions made by the men and women of the U.S. Customs Service.
